PG in Environmental Informatics at University of Lancaster United Kingdom

This MSc was established to meet this demand from employers in the public and private sectors. This innovative course uses expertise from many of the academic departments and research units within the LEC and InfoLab21 to present unique, high-level interdisciplinary training on all aspects of environmental information pathways and state-of-the-art environmental information technology. Students gain a thorough understanding of the fundamental principles of Environmental Informatics and are able to apply their expertise to the acquisition, analysis, management and dissemination of environmental information. The course offers students the option of a research placement as an alternative to a traditional dissertation.

Despite major technological and scientific advances in recent years, society is still widely regarded as ?data rich but information poor’ with respect to fundamental environmental processes and problems. This is a crucial time for understanding the environment because of the gathering pace of global change, the emerging debates about sustainable development and concern about the impacts and risks of particular environmental hazards. There is a significant and increasing demand on organisations that have responsibilities for the environment to provide timely, accurate, accessible and comprehensible information for decision making.

Employability
Graduates have gone on to pursue careers in the environmental and conservation sectors, as well as progressing to further study for a PhD. Our most recent destination data shows that 90% of our graduates were in employment or further study; 60% went on to work or study in the environmental sector.

MSc in Communication & Information Systems at University of Lancaster UK

This course focuses on a specific research topic that is decided on an individual basis and can be started at any time of the year.

Initially students undertake an induction course which leads to the production of a learning contract that outlines project objectives and outcome expectations as agreed by both the student and their appointed research supervisor.

At the end of the first two months the student will deliver a preliminary research report which effectively provides specific details in terms of background research project information and all subsequent project milestones. This initial report counts as 20% of the overall degree assessment. The next eight months are spent on research project work and the final two months are devoted in writing a project dissertation. Upon the successful completion of this MSc by Research programme, the student will have clearly demonstrated the ability to encompass the time management and technical professionalism required to complete postgraduate research, within the dynamic, industry-linked training environment offered by the Department and InfoLab21.
