Information systems are mechanisms consciously designed help people achieve their goals. The purpose of information systems design is to achieve a good fit between the social needs and technical aspects of any purposeful human activity. Good designs are ‘transparent’; people don’t see the system rather the system becomes an extension of the user, enhancing them by making their tasks easier, quicker and more accurate and never getting in the way. Exceptional designs are also elegant and life enhancing.
Becoming a master of information systems design is a process that starts in the first year through developing a familiarity of the basic tools with which systems are built and an understanding of the wider context of business and commercial organisations that they serve.
At level two competences in tool use is increased through techniques of analysis and design and deepened with practice in detailed database design. While understanding of context is focused through evaluating software development tools and management information systems.
By the time they encounter the more advanced methods of information management and designing decision support systems at level 4 the apprentice systems designer is reaching journeyman status and ready to start practicing ‘in the real world’ a process that they engage in extensively through their final year project.

Content and Assessment
In Year 1, for AS, you will look at what is meant by Information, how it can be used in the context of information systems and the impact of such systems on organisations and society at large. You will learn some of the basic technical means by which information systems are implemented. Alongside this study we hope to develop your practical skills in applications packages. This will enable you to complete a task based on a number of software applications. This work will be used to complete a written exam
In Year 2, A2 studies look more fully at the development life cycle of a corporate information system and its wider impact in terms of project management, user training and legal implications. The technical aspects will be covered in more depth. A substantial coursework project, based on a real life problem, will be developed throughout the year. Students are not expected to learn a programming language on this course.

The future scenario is “IT in everything”. IT is featured everywhere – from e-mails, search engines and mobile phones to robots on Mars and modern hospitals. You have an opportunity to contribute to this development and help design and market the products of the future.
There is a need for people with special knowledge about the technical aspects of IT combined with design skills and business understanding. You can acquire this knowledge in our new Bachelor’s degree programme in IT.
The degree programme emphasises close contact with the business community. To illustrate this focus on the business community, all students enrolled in the degree programme get an opportunity to undertake paid periods of practical training in IT companies – both in Denmark and abroad – during the course of their studies.
The Bachelor’s degree programme in IT is well-balanced and takes three years to complete. It also qualifies you for admission to the Master’s and PhD degree programmes.
After the first year, you can choose between three lines: product design (Product), implementation (Software), and marketing (Business).
This degree programme at the University of Aarhus is based at the Department of Computer Science, which is internationally renowned for its high level of IT research and education. We work closely with the Aarhus School of Business, the Aarhus School of Architecture, the Alexandra Institute and it-forum midtjylland.
