Course Structure
The MRes involves both taught and research components. You take four modules combining research methodology with your subject specialism. Your research skills are developed through group sessions, from formulating research proposals to communicating research outcomes to professional audiences. You work on a flexible basis with a specialist supervisor, from planning your research to completion of the dissertation. You attend Frameworks for Research which introduces you to different research approaches across a range of disciplines. You then select approved relevant modules. Part-time students have access to the same modules and skills training, but can take modules in a flexible way and not begin the dissertation until the second year. Your dissertation is about 20,000 words long.

The MRes variant of the MSc is intended for those planning to register for a PhD. The MRes is based on the MSc programme but includes additional assessed quantitative and qualitative research methods modules. It also replaces the standard summer dissertation with a research plan of at least 10,000 words. All students who achieve the minimum required standard will be allowed to register as PhD students in the following year, provided a suitable supervisor can be identified.

Final examination
The aim of the second level degree thesis is to test the student’s ability to discuss and explain work dealing with a subject related to Information Technology. The student shall decide the topic of the thesis with the assistance of a supervisor that will also assist and advise the student in the actual writing/preparation of the thesis (which may also include laboratory activities and/or work experience).
The final examination consists of a discussion of an individual report on the activities carried out by the student’s original, experimental thesis on a specialised topic.
The graduating sessions are open to the public; the examination consists of the discussion of a written work in a viva voce examination evaluated by an Examination Committee. In order to be admitted to the final examination, students must have achieved all the credits required by the degree course regulations for activities other than the final examination. The final mark is based on a general assessment of the graduating student’s work during the course. The highest mark that can be achieved is 110/110. Students who achieve the maximum mark can also be awarded a distinction when there is a unanimous vote of the examination board members.

AIU has developed a method to quantify and qualify the professional background of each individual and their academic credentials, giving the student as an academic credit according to their true level of knowledge.
While the IAU criteria for granting a degree in particular are the same as using the vast majority of institutions of higher learning, our practice of granting credit, taking into account the “life experiences” of the student has already gained acceptance in the academic community in recent years.
Development of curricula and agendas
IAU in the development of curricula and agendas is a joint activity between the student and academic advisor. The program of each student is unique and develops as a result of a joint effort of students, staff and academic advisor. The director who oversees the academic advisors has a doctorate in education with a specialty in designing curricula and programs. The student’s academic advisor works directly with the supervisor to set its agenda (Study areas).
