Computing technologies are ubiquitous. Not since the invention of the printing press has the world seen such a revolution in the way information can be used and disseminated. The social impact has been astounding. As responsible professionals we want to understand the impact our work has had and will continue to have on culture, work and politics.
Given a question, any question, can we make a computer system that will answer it? Will the system be easy to use and available anywhere for its intended users? Will it be secure? Information Technology attempts to answer these questions affirmatively. The “question” might come from the domain of business or biology or journalism. Indeed all professions today are looking to use computing technologies in innovative ways.
The focus here is using what already has been built by interconnecting software components so they do something new. An IT professional will know some programming, be able to make use of operating systems’ resources, control communication between hosts over the Internet, access and store data on servers using database technologies, and build intuitive graphical interfaces.

C. Learning Agreement (12 cr)
A student, along with a faculty member, will devise a learning agreement containing a minimum of twelve credit hours, at least nine of which are at the 300- or 400-level. The proposed agreement is to be submitted to the Information Science Program Faculty Committee and the Information Science Director for approval, typically by the end of the student’s sophomore year. The sequence of courses comprising the learning agreement may be from any one of several different departments participating in the Information Science Program.

The Information Systems concentration in the CS major is particularly suitable for students who are interested in the design and deployment of business and e-commerce applications, in information technology project management, and in technology support.
This concentration includes coursework in computer systems software, programming, networks, data base systems, and software engineering, as well as basic courses leading to a minor in Business Administration. You should consider this concentration if you are interested in business applications or in a career in computing/networking infrastructure.
The minor in CS is appropriate for students who wish to combine the study of computer science with a major in a closely related area (such as mathematics or a physical science) or who are interested in understanding the basics of computer science without committing to it as a major.
