The network specialist certificate is designed to provide the student with the knowledge and skills required to construct, maintain, and administer a computer network system. The configuration of the hardware components of a network system and the software necessary to operate and control the network will be covered in detail. After successful completion of this program, the student will be eligible to sit for the CompTia A+ certification exam, Novell CNA certification exam, CISCO CCNA certification exam, and Microsoft 2000 Server certification exam.

This program offers the student the basic technical skills to establish and enhance a career in computer networking. In addition, the student will develop important human relations and communications skills for advancement in the areas of customer service and management. The units earned apply to the Bachelor of Science program within limitations.

This program is designed to provide students with the technical skills and knowledge to start a career as a PC/Network Support Technician with an emphasis in network administration. The graduate will have the ability to operate, diagnose, analyze, install, repair, administrate and maintain microcomputer operating systems. Additionally, the graduate will be able to build, administrate and implement Novell, Windows NT, Windows 2000 and UNIX operating systems in a local area network environment. The graduate will also be able to use common software including word processing, spreadsheet, database, presentation and data communications.

You will learn to maintain voice and data telecommunication systems. For voice systems, you will design, install and manage phone systems, and practice programming switches for telephone applications in a lab situation. For data systems, you’ll learn Linux, Microsoft and Novell operating systems, and you’ll master computer application programs: Windows, word processing, spread sheet, database, web design, graphics and the Internet. You’ll install software and configure data systems to operates efficiently. Completing an internship in a private sector telecommunications department will enhance your skills in this area.

You will complete courses that lead to certification essential to the tele-communications industry, including Cisco, CCNA and CCNP.

Attendance
Attendance varies throughout the year, with a minimum full time commitment of two afternoons per week, with occasionally more concentrated study.

Special Facilities
You would have exclusive access to IT facilities of nearly 100 fully Novell networked PC’s. These run specialist software and applications required for the course, and in business.
