Information Technology Curriculum
Students must earn a minimum of 124 credit hours for graduation. The bachelor of science curriculum is composed of 55 credit hours. The associate of science and the minor require 18 credit hours.

Throughout the curriculum, students will apply topics through numerous hands-on activities. An applied approach will cultivate the problem-solving and analytical skills necessary for developing, managing, and maintaining information resources in today’s global electronic society.

Graduates of the Bachelor of Business Administration program are prepared for professional careers in business, government, and non-profit organizations. Courses in this unique program provide students with the skill sets required of knowledge workers in this Information Age. Graduates will have the problem solving, strategic planning, communication, interpersonal, and technology application skills needed to meet operational demands and resolve contemporary business problems. Through exposure to active learning techniques, practical application of research methods, team projects, presentations, and internships, students will be prepared not only for the challenges of management positions, but also for a life of continued learning – both at work and in their private lives.

The department offers courses in the areas of computer information systems (CIS), operations research, and statistics. Courses in each of these areas provide training in problemsolving techniques useful in gaining strategic advantage in the marketplace. CIS students are afforded the opportunity to gain a strong foundation in the business, managerial, and technical issues related to information systems with courses in programming, data management, telecommunications, the Internet and e-commerce, and the analysis and design of computer-based solutions to business problems. Operations research trains students in the application of mathematical models and decision making for business, industry, and government with an emphasis on modeling methods, analysis, and implementation relevant to operational and management planning issues. Statistics students are provided with a skills base for the application of statistical techniques and tools to a wide variety of areas, including computational statistics, sample survey, experimental design, and quantitative methods in marketing.

Hence, students not only receive superior instruction in information technology, but they also receive a solid grounding in business processes and the traditional functional areas of organizations. Experiential learning is the cornerstone of all our academic programs. Under the supervision of our exceptional faculty, students experience the design and management of contemporary hardware and software systems. Students also learn to improve their people skills by working in small groups on significant projects in each course, learn how to make convincing professional oral presentations, and practice writing professional technical reports.

The Information Technology program is a career-laddered, competency based program that provides training in the use and support of business related computer information systems, data communications, and the development of business computer information systems programs using procedural, event-driven and object oriented programming techniques.

The program includes a combination of business, computer, and information technology courses. Campus-based computer and networking projects, faculty supervised laboratories, and workplace internships provide hands-on experience designed to prepare students for positions in computer support, programming, network administration, or systems development in a business information technology system. The program focuses on computers and information technology as tools to solve business problems.

Information systems management (ISM) is a multidisciplinary major that focuses on the fusion of information systems, technology, and business management for two purposes: the use of information systems to solve business problems, and the management of technology, which includes new product development and supply chain management. It is a rigorous, challenging major for those students wanting to pursue careers in information systems management and the management of technology. To accomplish these objectives, students must learn the mathematics, science, and technical fundamentals of computer science and engineering as well as understand the environment in which information systems and technology management solutions will be applied, through economics, business, and management of technology courses.

This degree has been designed around the e-skills UK criteria and is supported by some of the leading businesses in the UK. The degree is built to provide a mixture of IT, business and personal development that makes it a combination of traditional degree and graduate training programme.

As a key part of the degree students will spend time, around 25 per cent, working on real business problems. Students will then spend around 25 per cent of the time on IT, and a further 25 per cent on the business side. The remaining 25 per cent is spent in developing interpersonal and other transferable skills that will make them an invaluable member of any business they may work in.

Students taking information technology as part of a combined honours degree are given the opportunity to study the application of IT within a business context. In the first year, students are introduced to the tools and techniques for constructing computerised business systems. In the following year, this course provides students with further tools to design and build practical software solutions to a variety of business problems. In the final year, students are introduced to the strategic role and management of IT and its importance to the long-term survival of the organisation.
